DO YOU USE A TONGUE SCRAPER?

TONGUE SCRAPING BENEFITS

Tongue scraping is recommended by Ayurveda as part of a daily health routine.

Because approximately half the bacteria in our mouth are harbored in the deep grooves and crevices on the tongue, brushing and flossing only takes care of our oral health to a point.

The tongue gets coated with residue from the digestive system, especially while sleeping. This coating on the tongue contains bacteria, food debris, fungi, toxins, and dead cells from the surface of the tongue.

If the bacteria and toxins are not removed from the tongue, they absorb into the body causing bad breath, tooth problems, gum problems, and digestive problems.

When the coating on your tongue is removed, not only is your mouth cleaner, but taste receptors are stimulated, and your ability to taste increases, which enhances the enjoyment of eating and drinking.

In addition, because digestion starts with taste, digestion is improved. Taste gets saliva production started, which strengthens your metabolism.

Herbs and spices impart their beneficial health effects on the body from their initial contact with the taste receptors on the tongue, so keeping the tongue clean improves the connection between food and body.

images-1The tongue scraper collects and removes bacteria from the tongue better than a toothbrush can. It is passed along the tongue from the back of your tongue to the tip firmly, but gently five to seven times.

Rinse the scraper off between each pass. Some people may press too hard or start too far back on the tongue and stimulate the gag reflex. It takes a little practice to avoid the gag reflex.

Tongue scrapers are widely available in drug stores. Look for one that is made of a non-corrosive metal like stainless steel. The scraper needs to be smooth and curved, so it won’t injure your tongue.

You will enjoy fresher breath, cleaner environment for your teeth, healthier gum tissues, a keener sense of taste, and better digestion.
