Last week I mentioned that we are much more than our mind. We do not have to allow the mind to run amuck making decisions for us, or by making us feel this way or that way, or making us do that thing or this thing!
We can train our mind to make lifestyle choices that promote health instead of disease for our body and mind.
Overriding the run amuck mind is challenging. Consciously making lifestyle choices takes awareness and practice. Good background information gives you good reason to make and support good lifestyle changes.
Let’s look at some reasons for lifestyle changes with regard to choosing fresh food instead of processed food.
Ayurveda teaches us to eat our food as fresh as possible, because fresh food is live energy and live energy is what builds and rebuilds the tissues of our body.
Processed food has very little live energy left in it to build and rebuild our tissues. The live parts of processed food has been stripped away mainly to make the product shelf stable and easy to use, and the processing renders it lifeless. Processed food goes right to work producing excess fat in the body.
We all know it’s much faster to cook processed rice or processed oatmeal than whole grain rice or whole oats. It’s much easier to open a can of green beans to heat up than it is to wash, cut and cook fresh green beans, but processed food is lacking life and nutrition.
On the other hand, whole grains and fresh produce are nutritious, alive with energy and a life-promoting force. They are alive with the 5 major elements of the universe. This is the most important point:
Our body and our food are made of the same five major elements.
The five major elements of the universe are earth, water, fire, air, and space. The seven main tissues of the body, which are made from those five elements include plasma, blood, muscle, fat, marrow, bone and generative tissue.
On top of that, the immune system is the essence of these seven body tissues and is responsible for our strength and resistance to disease.
The five major elements help support the life of our body from birth to death, and in plants from sprout to decay. When we eat, we borrow these five elements from the universe to build our body with every food choice we make. We literally are what we eat.
Let’s ask ourselves: From what part of the spectrum from birth/sprout to death/decay do we want to borrow from the universe to feed our body and immune system?
We have a choice to train our mind to align ourselves with the most life-promoting forces of that spectrum by choosing to eat fresh, live food. Start with integrating fresh food into your life a little more here and there and before long you will prefer fresh food.
I BEGIN NOW: To bypass the frozen, canned or packaged food whenever possible. To keep in mind that every time I choose fresh, I’m aligning myself with health. To remember that even though it takes a lot more of my time to prepare meals using fresh ingredients, I know health and feeling good will be the reward.
